It’s that time of year again where we start looking forward to holidays, cocktails, sea, or even just seeing some sun!!
Of course we know all about SPF for our skin in sunny climes but what about our hair? As most of us know sun affects the condition of our hair as well as the colour. So what can we do to protect it? The first valuable tip I can give you is rub your sunscreen into your parting and hairline. Scalps burn too! I know from experience. A hat is always a good choice for out in the sun, keeping your hair covered completely. Little to no UVA rays can get to your hair in the first place helping to preserve your colour in the sun.
Not only is the sun a potential problem for hair on on holiday change of water can cause havoc for hair condition. Especially if your on the dryer side to start with. The key to help you fight this one is moisture! Even more than what you already do! moisture masks are your friend here, even if normally you find them too heavy at home. I personally have finer straight hair and only use light weight conditioner at home. Abroad by the time it’s had pool, sea water, sun, heat and harder water by a few days if I used my normal conditioner I wouldn’t even be able to get a comb through it!! So I upgrade to a intense moisture mask and leave it on for 5 mins while I’m in the shower on a evening. (Tip. The steam intensifies the effect)
My favourite for taking on holiday is the Nine Yards Never Dull conditioner and mask in one. Easy to use just apply like your normal conditioner and leave on rinse when you’re done.
It’s also good to think about preventing getting your hair dry whilst your enjoying the beach, pool or activities you enjoy in the sun. A tip I always give my clients is wet your hair down first. Apply conditioner, comb through then tie up, pin up, plait, stick your hat on whichever suits you. The conditioner will treat your hair while it’s on. Plus your hair absorbs water. So if your hair is already wet and got conditioner on it hair can’t absorb as much as the chlorine or salt in the water so therefore less drying and damage from those sources. You’re welcome!
For those who tie their hair up my best tip is go for what feels comfortable but stay away from elastic bobbles. They tend to snag on the hair and can cause breakage.
So my summary for hair care on holiday is
Moisture, moisture, moisture!
Your hairstylist will be able to advise you on products and styling tips because they know your hair. Ask on your next appointment.
Happy holidays!!
