Is coconut oil good for your hair?

Short answer no! If I ever get a client in the chair saying “I’m using coconut oil on my hair and it feels so much better!” My heart sinks.

Let me explain. Coconut oil pure on its own would do very little to hair, but to adapt it to a hair product manufacturers have to process and add other elements. This is when we get problems. Most commonly silicones and mineral oils which form a coating on the hair and scalp which stops the natural oils and any other moisture your hair and scalp needs from getting in, therefore in the long run drying your hair out even further! Not good. Not just the moisture side of it, coating on your hair for colouring services can effect end result too.

So why is it so popular? Easy. Fashion and great marketing. If you have dry hair and struggling with it you’re going to start looking for something that will help. So the image of the model with her perfect styled shiny hair that’s exactly what you want you are going to want to know what she’s had on her hair. All the claims that solve your hair problems, eliminate the frizz, add shine (silicones added so your hair looks better but definitely isn’t) moisurises your hair and scalp (mineral oils block your hair from absorbing moisture and can cause skin irritation) Repair split ends and damage, this was my favourite. If the hair is already broken whenever it’s split ends or breaking from too much heat no product that exists in the world will repair that! Even professional products can’t mend which has already broken. Once hair has reached its limit and broken game over.

So your next question is going to be “what should I use on my hair?” Ask your hair stylist. Or any hair stylist if you don’t have a regular one. Any good one will ask what your hair concerns are and what your hair care routine is, they can advise you from there. Also with how to use the products and how regularly.

So please! Stay away from the coconut oil!
